Microstructural differences in white matter tracts across middle to late adulthood: a diffusion MRI study on 7167 UK Biobank participants

چکیده

White matter fiber tracts demonstrate heterogeneous vulnerabilities to aging effects. Here, we estimated age-related differences in tract properties using UK Biobank diffusion magnetic resonance imaging data of 7167 47- 76-year-old neurologically healthy people (3368 men and 3799 women). Tract terms generalized fractional anisotropy, axial diffusivity, radial mean diffusivity were sampled on 76 tracts; for each tract, by fitting these indices against age a linear model. This cross-sectional study demonstrated 4 age-difference patterns. The dominant pattern was lower anisotropy higher with age, constituting 45 tracts, mostly involving the association, projection, commissure fibers connecting prefrontal lobe. other 3 patterns constituted only 14 atypical indices, mainly involved parietal, occipital, temporal cortices. By analyzing large volume available from Biobank, has provided detailed description over whole brain which generally supports myelodegeneration hypothesis.

Evaluation of White Matter Tracts in Autistic Individuals: A Review of Diffusion Tensor Imaging Studies

Introduction: Many cognitive and social deficits in autism are caused by abnormal functional connections between brain networks, which are manifested by impaired integrity of white matter tracts. White matter tracts are like the "highways" of the brain, which allow fast and efficient communication in different areas of the brain. The purpose of this article is to review the results of autism st...

Ageing and brain white matter structure in 3,513 UK Biobank participants

Quantifying the microstructural properties of the human brain's connections is necessary for understanding normal ageing and disease. Here we examine brain white matter magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data in 3,513 generally healthy people aged 44.64-77.12 years from the UK Biobank. Using conventional water diffusion measures and newer, rarely studied indices from neurite orientation dispersio...

Microstructural correlations of white matter tracts in the human brain

The purpose of this study is to investigate whether specific patterns of correlation exist in diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) parameters across different white matter tracts in the normal human brain, and whether the relative strengths of these putative microstructural correlations might reflect phylogenetic and functional similarities between tracts. We performed quantitative DTI fiber tracking...

Representing Diffusion MRI in 5D for Segmentation of White Matter Tracts with a Level Set Method

We present a method for segmenting white matter tracts from high angular resolution diffusion MR. images by representing the data in a 5 dimensional space of position and orientation. Whereas crossing fiber tracts cannot be separated in 3D position space, they clearly disentangle in 5D position-orientation space. The segmentation is done using a 5D level set method applied to hyper-surfaces evo...

Microstructural integrity of white matter tracts amongst older fallers: A DTI study

OBJECTIVES This study assesses the whole brain microstructural integrity of white matter tracts (WMT) among older individuals with a history of falls compared to non-fallers. METHODS 85 participants (43 fallers, 42 non-fallers) were evaluated with conventional MRI and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) sequences of the brain. DTI metrics were obtained from selected WMT using tract-based spatial s...
